Giving vs. Receiving
A Time for a season of Gratitude, Generosity and Thanksgiving
I can only give so much because I don’t have much. What if I’m left without enough? Are these your thoughts when you are asked to donate, support, give back, or help someone out in need or less fortunate?
These used to be my thoughts, my fears, my concerns and my reality. Then, one day I heard a pastor say “We are taking the offering now, please put your wallets away.” What? Was I losing it? What was he saying? He went on to say that if you are giving with the fear of not having enough left over for groceries or to pay the bills, then don’t give. You need it more than the church does. I loved that, it took the fear away. He went on to say that God loves a joyful giver, only give if it brings you joy. Oh how I loved this, I love the things that bring me JOY, and who doesn’t want more JOY?
Then, for a while I started giving to every charity and cause that asked until my husband said “Hey, what are you doing?” I said, “I’m getting as much joy as I can!” I remember as a child, my mom would say look down and let the plate pass quickly by, we don’t have any money. The truth is, we didn’t have any money. That fear of not having enough stuck with me for a long time. I’m free from it now. Thank goodness, for it’s not fun to live in fear. Then, I asked a friend who has tithed for years how she does it. She says at the beginning of each month they write out their checks to their church. Then, they pick three charities a year and one person at Christmas to surprise with a donation. Wow, you can pay with a check not just the cash you have on hand! Okay, I might be a slow learner but I’ve got it now.
I’ve learned a number of things over the years about giving money, time, resources, or even a place to stay. I always received more than I gave, I truly am blessed today because I can give. I also know without a shadow of a doubt that you can never ever out give the giver of life! When I feel a little down or empty, I repeat “You can’t out give the giver, you can’t out give the giver,” and then, I’m reminded that today I have more love, joy, peace, home, and food than I ever dreamed of as a child!
This Thanksgiving I feel blessed to be able to give with JOY! We don’t always have to give money. We can lend a listening ear, give an invitation to celebrate, volunteered time, or offer a simple smile. What will you give during this joyous season?
