To give or receive love…that is the question.
We cannot control how we receive love but we can control how and to whom we give it. I think the first step in love is knowing how people receive it. There are 5 love languages: Physical Touch, Quality Time, Words of Affirmation, Gifts, and Acts of Service. All can feel good to each of us but usually only one truly fills us up.
During this month of heart health and love it is hard not to think in red. We see love everywhere we go; some of us long for more while others find ways to spread the love everyday and everywhere we go. I find this month can be challenging for some. I feel like single people think the married ones are living out a romantic movie while they sit home eating a box of chocolates. One thing I know for sure is that comparison is the thief of all joy. No one lives out a romantic movie life, though I wish we could.
The other thing I know is that high expectations most likely will leave you disappointed. Someone might write you a romantic note but if your love language is gifts it may leave you longing for more. Or another might run around making you a romantic dinner while you long for cuddle time. What does this month mean to you? Is it about love? Heart health? Romance? Or is it about the most important love of all, that God loves you and desires you to love yourself enough to take care of yourself?
No other person can fill you up, meet all your needs and make you feel whole. Don’t long to be someone else, instead use that time and energy to do something nice for yourself. Get a pedicure, buy a great book, make time to reconnect with an old friend, volunteer, spend time making a list of all you are grateful for. This month is the month of Love, Heart Health, Valentines and YOU!
