Do You Believe?
Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve believed in Santa Claus. I remember people making fun of me growing up because I was so determined that Santa was real, and though I was made fun of, I still felt bad for those kids because they didn’t believe. I have always loved the wonder, magic, mystery, and spirit of Christmas.
As a little girl, we went to Midnight Mass, (at 10pm), and would come home to gifts outside of our garage which proved to me there was truly a Santa. Then, in my early 20’s as a single mom, I had six bags of groceries with a $20 bill in each bag just appear one year and during another year, I received an anonymous envelope filled with money. After these miracles year over year, please don’t try to tell me there’s no such thing as Santa. He is real, and I’m so sorry if you don’t know him or you’ve chosen not to become him for someone else.
During this time of the year, I love the movies Miracle on 34th Street and Elf. Both movies are filled with the wonder, magic, mystery, and spirit of Christmas which are dear to my heart. Through my love for Christmas, I haven’t forgotten that it’s the date many of us remember and celebrate as Jesus’ Birth but to me, the spirit of Christmas is about so many more things.
If you really tune in, this season invites us to slow down rather than hustle and bustle. As you’re out and about, don’t forget to take in the beauty of the Christmas lights and decorations (which I believe should be up from November through March). Take the time to enjoy listening and singing along with all the Christmas songs, and more than anything else, embody the generous spirit of Christmas and let it shine upon everyone you see.
To me, it’s in the spirit of love that we give to friends, family, strangers, charity, and anonymously. Those of us who give choose to do so because it spreads joy and love to those close and far. No matter who you are or why you give, you can believe. Each of us can be the spirit of Christ, Santa, or Christmas with all in our lives; even if it’s with those who are different and don’t celebrate the holiday season the same as you.
For many, this season is about family and traditions while some others have no family or traditions. This week I encourage you to help yourself and others keep believing by spreading love and joy to someone in your life who could use a reminder of what the Christmas spirit is all about! What can you do to be that person’s Secret Santa and brighten their holiday?
Wishing you a very Merry Christmas and a happy holiday season! What does living your exceptional life look like to you?
