Today in the ABCs of Living an Exceptional Life, we’re on the letter O. O stands for opportunity. The opportunity to show kindness.
I was recently visiting my son in another state. While we were dining out, I thought to myself, “this restaurant has fabulous service, from the hostess to the busser.” Each member of the staff, whether they were running out warm rolls or iced tea, they served us with a smile and encouragement. As we were leaving the restaurant, I walked up to the hostess station, and I asked to see the manager. Her face changed from having a smile to worry, wondering she had done wrong. The manager reluctantly came out, also wondering what they have done wrong. Instead of complaining about something, which I think is a lot easier for us to do sometimes, I said, “I want you to know that my service tonight was amazing. The hostess greeted me with a smile and offered me my choice of tables. The waitress took our drink order right away, and the bartender brought them over quickly. People ran out warm food and warm muffins. The busser smiled at us. I want to thank you for this opportunity. I want to thank you for this time with my son that was so enjoyable with a great meal and excellent service.” In that moment, not only did the manager smile, but the hostess also lit up with a smile. I wondered when the last time was that somebody stopped to ask to speak to the manager to say something kind.
The most rewarding moment for me, was my son standing behind the hostess hearing me encourage others—the young people around us that sometimes we don’t even see, let alone encourage, we take for granted.
Often, we are quick to complain when something doesn’t work. When was the last time you thanked people for going above and beyond for a basic service? I encourage you to use your words to be kind and encouraging to those around you. Look people in the eye. Thank them for their great service.
