Living Beyond Gratitude to Generosity
Some blog posts are written for a moment in time.
Others become markers along the journey.
I originally wrote these words in November of 2022, just weeks after Hurricane Ian changed our lives and our landscape. At the time, we were displaced, exhausted, and unsure when—or if—we would return home to our condo on the beach.
Today, I’m writing from that very place.
The walls are familiar again. The ocean still meets the shore. And yet, everything has changed.
Since that season of recovery, life has continued to unfold in ways both beautiful and heartbreaking. My mom lived a full 96 years and has now gone home to God. Greg faced and overcame a triple bypass—an unexpected chapter that reminded us how fragile and precious health truly is. Megan lost her job, forcing another moment of surrender, resilience, and trust. And now, Greg’s mom is in her final chapter, gently teaching us once again about love, presence, and letting go.
The storms did not stop when the hurricane passed.
They simply changed form.
Back in 2022, what carried us through the immediate aftermath of Ian were the countless acts of kindness from others—notes, texts, donations, cards, phone calls, prayers, encouragement. Those gestures sustained us, not just practically, but spiritually. They were reminders that even when life feels uprooted, love still holds.
What I know now—more deeply than I did then—is that gratitude is not a one-time response to crisis. It is a posture we return to again and again.
And generosity?
Generosity is what gratitude grows into.
It looks like showing up when you’re tired.
Listening when your heart is heavy.
Offering grace when answers are unclear.
Sharing hope even while you are still healing.
Over the past few years, I’ve learned that a good life is indeed filled with gratitude.
A great life is shaped by generosity.
And a grand life—the kind that leaves a legacy—is formed through growth, often born from pain we never asked for.
Whether your season right now feels steady or uncertain, joyful or tender, may you know this: you are not alone. Light still finds its way into the cracks. Love still multiplies when shared. And even in loss, life continues to invite us to become more open-hearted, more compassionate, and more generous with one another.
May this season—whatever it looks like for you—be filled with love, light, hope, healing, and the quiet strength that comes from walking forward one faithful step at a time.
