Buying and Selling
When buying things, do you purchase out of fear or out of hope? And when you sell to others, are they buying out of a sense of fear, or a feeling of hope? I love to sell, and have been doing it most of my life, starting with earning the title, “Top in Sales” for Girl Scout cookies in 2nd grade. I dedicated time going from door to door, which certainly paid off. I’ve never been able to sell just anything, however. If I’m selling something it will only be something I love and believe in. I don’t feel the need to sell things just for the sake of selling, and I don’t want others to buy something they don’t want or need. I always focus on using hope when selling, never ever using fear to try and sell people.
Over time, while watching and learning from the buying and selling styles of others, it fascinates me to see how often people buy out of fear. Many times, they’re convinced by marketing techniques that someone out there truly has the magic pill, formula, trick, tactic, or strategy that they can’t live or succeed without. Don’t get me wrong, there are some great products and services out there but please do your research before buying.
As an honest professional, I’m happy to sell you something you’ll truly benefit from, but I don’t ever want you to buy something from me that only benefits me. In the speaking world, many people are selling each other products and services with the sole focus of becoming successful. To me, success means a lot of things, not exclusively making money, so my first piece of encouragement for someone hiring a speaker is to be cautious, ask a lot of questions, and don’t believe everything you hear and see on social media.
Any of us can self-promote and tell you how great we are, and many of us will if you’re willing to listen, but before you hand over your credit card, ask yourself, “Has this person done for themselves what they’re telling me to do? Are they successful in the same way I want to be successful?” Often, many people compromise in one area in hopes of gain in another, which is why I want to caution you to be careful about what you sign up for. I’m not saying don’t ever buy, but I am saying ask about the company, its products, history, product results, and their own story before you say yes. Finally, don’t forget to ask the most important question, “Am I buying out of fear of missing out, not being successful, and not achieving goals, or am I buying out of hope for better results, support on the journey, or more success than I’ve had in the past? Is this person selling to me out of fear or hope?”
Buying new things can be fun and the positive interaction that comes with buying and selling out of hope makes the experience that much better. As you consider new purchases this week, I encourage you to stop and consider the purchase first and buy only if it will help you become what and who you want to be, blocking out the possibility of leading you to buy out of fear.

A keynote in public speaking is a talk that establishes a main underlying theme. In corporate or commercial settings, greater importance is attached to the delivery of a keynote speech or keynote address. The keynote establishes the framework for the following programme of events or convention agenda; frequently the role of keynote speaker will include that of convention moderator. It will also flag up a larger idea – a literary story, an individual musical piece, or event.
At political or industrial conventions and expositions and at academic conferences, the keynote address or keynote speech is delivered to set the underlying tone and summarize the core message or most important revelation of the event. Keynote speeches are also given at the graduation and commencement ceremonies of colleges, universities, and major high schools, usually by accomplished academics or celebrities invited by the student body. These speeches are often called a commencement speech.
Keynote speakers are often selected to raise interest in a particular event, such as a conference or large meeting sponsored by a corporation or association, and draw attendees to attend that program. Selecting a keynote speaker who is well known for his or her expertise in a particular field, or who has wide name recognition due to other accomplishments, will probably raise enthusiasm among prospective attendees for a meeting or conference. Increasingly the word keynote is being used as a synonym for plenary session or “invited talk,” with some conferences having an opening keynote, a closing keynote, and many other keynotes.
A keynote speaker may work independently, be represented by a speakers bureau, or by a new crowdsourced model such as the speakerwiki website. In the event that a speaker is represented by a traditional speakers bureau, a commission, typically 25%–30%, is due; however, this is traditionally and ethically absorbed by the speaker rather than the client so that the fee remains flat and transparently priced to the client.
The term key note comes from the practice of a cappella, such as doo-wop or barbershop singers, playing a note before singing. The note played determines the key in which the song will be performed.
The I in the ABC’s of a successful business is it is not all about you. Many say there is no I in team but beyond that there is no I in any successful business. It has to be about them, what you can do for them, how you can serve them, how you can show them a better product, service or way to view the world! For me I do love to show people how they can eliminate their Excuses to Expose their Extra-Ordinary to become the Exception! #MotivationalSpeaker #BetheException #GIVE #Serve #InspirationalSpeaker #PineapplePrinciple

When Disaster Strikes
I wish that title was merely a hypothetical for me, but the reality is that my family lost everything we owned in a fire 11 days after my 11th birthday. There have been several fires on the news lately, including the long fire season in California last year. Each time I see a new fire report on the news, it brings me back to that cold morning in March when we were living in Champagne, IL. We stood outside freezing, watching as everything we owned burned in our apartment building, all because someone wanted to know what it felt like to start a fire.
As I think about that night I often wonder, “What would someone I know do if they had a fire?” Do you know what possessions you would try to save? What would you try to gather as you ran out the door? It’s good to have a plan so you don’t lose it all, but no one is ever really prepared for a fire, even if they think they are. You never know it’s coming and there’s no time to think once it happens, only to act. The hardest things for me to lose were our photos, because they were the only material things we couldn’t replace. But the most important thing to save is your life and the lives of those you love. While photos can’t be replaced memories can live on, and people truly are the only thing you can’t replace.
Fires, floods, tornadoes, and hurricanes are incredibly powerful forces with the ability to strike anytime they please. There isn’t a way to fully plan for these disasters, so it’s important to live in a way that when the unexpected happens you don’t leave any unsettled business behind. If you feel you have unsettled business in your life right now, take time to make it right for yourself and those in your life. I hope you never have to run from a disaster, but if you do, remember that you have the love and kindness of those around you to support you.
This week I encourage you to create an escape plan or update an existing plan you already have. If you have others in your house, create it together and be sure everyone knows what to do if that moment ever comes. While you may not be able to save everything, you have the power to plan ahead and save the most precious possessions: your life and the lives of those you love.
