An Interview a Day Keeps the Doctor Away
Some say an apple a day keeps the doctor away, but is that true? Instead, I love to believe that sharing a Dove Love a day keeps the doctor away. Those dark chocolates with a sweet message inside are good for the soul. However, lately I’ve been thinking, “Maybe it’s an interview a day that could keep the doctor away.”
This isn’t to say there’s anything wrong with doctors, but I feel there’s something so powerful about being kind to ourselves to enhance our good health. I love to practice interviewing with people I know, and I also know it’s not everyone’s thing, but I strongly believe if you don’t love to be interviewed, a little mind shift could do the trick.
You see, instead of thinking things like, “I hope they like me, pick me, want me,” when practicing, I encourage you to shift your thinking to statements such as, “I hope I like them, I want to work with them, I love their energy.” When we remain mindful of the power of our thoughts, and strive to keep them positive, we enjoy experiences more.
A practice interview is a place to share strengths, accomplishments, how far we’ve come, and our goals for the future. It’s also a great place to remind ourselves of all we are and all we have done. Some of you may be thinking, “But Annie, I’m not even looking for a job.” While you may not be, it’s still a great idea to practice, not only as an important reminder of the good stuff you’re made of, but in preparation for something just around the corner that you don’t know is coming yet.
I strive to always think about remembering to put a smile on, remind myself that my own positive thoughts have power, and that even if I’m not using the skills yet, I’ll be ready when I need to be. This week, I encourage you to find a friend and complete a practice interview. Then, discuss the strengths you saw in one another to continue adding to your positive thought power and the extraordinary person you know you are.

Do you live in a neighborhood? If so, do you know your neighbors? One of our neighbors who has been a part of our community for almost 30 years moved away recently which reinforces for me that life changes. In our neighborhood, we love our neighbors and have each others’ backs. From raising our kids together, to gathering for book club, to playing bunco, we’ve been through a lot.
As a connected community, we gather in the middle of the cul-de-sac with snacks and beverages to spend time together. Over the years, one neighbor has built us benches, while a few others have brought out their tables and chairs to make it a comfy gathering place. This is where our kids learned to ride bikes and drive cars, where we as families have laughed together and shared life. When there’s a death in the family of a neighbor, we send flowers; when there’s a new baby arriving on the block, we send gifts. And sometimes, when illness hits, we even bake bread or make soup to share.
The more I expand my horizons and see the culture of other neighborhoods, I often ask myself, “What happened?” Where I live, we share life with our neighbors the same as when I was a kid; these days, with hectic schedules and life to juggle, it isn’t what it used to be. This week, if you don’t know your neighbors, I encourage you to get to know them by spreading some neighborly love. You never know how you might positively impact someone in your community by starting with something as simple as a friendly, “Hello, how are you?”
After 23 years in our home, I look back and can’t imagine life without our neighbors. Are you ready to open your home and heart to getting to know yours, too?
