Are You Afraid?
I’m afraid right now and I’m assuming most of you are, too. The difference for me? I don’t let fear win because moments come, and moments go. I’ve always embraced change, the same as many of you. I believe most of us embrace change, as long as it’s good change that we’re in control of. Unfortunately, the recent changes we’re experiencing are out of our control and leaving everyone uncertain as additional changes are happening quickly.
I know all too well this time is not about me, my family, or my friends that I love. It’s not about our health, our businesses, our relationships, or our finances. To me, this time is about discovering who we really are when we’re forced to adapt to uncertain, unstable changes whether we like it or not. Things are moving fast right now, and these changes are going to happen with or without us.
For me, tears have been coming, often in the middle of the night when everything is still and silent. I’m afraid but I will keep living, keep believing, keep inspiring, and keep trusting that God has better plans for all of us on the other side of this. I believe that channeling my fear into generosity, love, and patience will help heal my hurting heart and lift those around me.
We all struggle with the fear of the unknown, just at different degrees and stages. Some of the tools I use to combat my fear are writing short lists of what I’m grateful for, taking three to five minutes to offer kindness or encouragement to others, and writing short cards to those who are sick and elderly. Each of us can benefit from good news during the week and this is my way of helping to spread it. As we come into this need to be home, I’ve created a daily schedule for myself which is helping to lower my anxiety and feel more in control. The other part of my day that helps bring me peace and serenity are my times of prayer which I feel we all need now more than ever.
The Serenity Prayer, “God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference,” has been running through my mind on a loop. It’s helping me remember that this time is about being our best and giving our best to others even on the days we might be feeling our worst. I’m comforted by knowing that nothing is more contagious than goodness, kindness, and love. Not even a virus.
This week, I encourage you to lift your family, your neighbors, and your community by lending a helping hand. Whether your helping hand is making a store delivery for the elderly, writing thank you cards for those who need them, or simply offering gentle words of kindness, it will make a difference for someone who may need support now more than ever. It’s up to each one of us to decide how we show up for one another in times of need; be the person someone else needs today!

When you think of your Faith journey what are your key words?
Faith is not just something you land on, it is a journey. It is believing when you can’t see. It is finding Peace when it doesn’t make sense to anyone else. It is a knowing that can not be explained with words but rather with feelings. It is believing in something bigger then yourself and trusting that God will never give up on you and will guide you out of the darkness when you feel lost and alone.
Friends, Do you have them?
Friends…Do you have them? Are you a good friend?
How many friends do you have? Do you have enough? Do you have too many? Can you have too many?
When you stop feeling connected with the people closest to you, it’s probably time to step back and ask, “Who are my friends?” Personally, I believe that if we have more than four close friends at any given time, it can be difficult to divide our time equally among them. While being inclusive and meeting new people can be fulfilling, we can be so busy doing so, that we can neglect the people we’ve already invited into our circle; though most people are more likely to limit their friend group than to over-invite. However, for those of us who have more than four close friends at any given time we have a tendency to lose track of one of them. In our desire to manage as many friends as possible, our closest ones might boil over or even get knocked off the stove while unattended.
There are a few things that can help ensure we’re being the kind of friend we could be. Some of us need to work on being an engaged friend, on planning events and doing the inviting, not always waiting to be invited by someone else. We also need to learn to listen more than we talk, which I know can be a challenging goal for many. Lastly, I think the area of friendship that usually needs the greatest amount of attention is balancing everyone in our lives, not just new or old, which has been my biggest challenge. I love my friends and am blessed to have many, both female and male.
Life gets busy for all of us. I was speaking last week at a conference and after I finished one audience member asked, “How do you do it?” When I asked what he was referring to, he responded, “How do you come into town, connect with everyone, make friends and then leave, never to see us again?” I had never thought of it that way. I do connect and become friends with some of my clients, so thank goodness for social media!
Take a moment today to examine who your friends are, make sure that you’re tending to their needs when they reach out to you, and that you’re reaching out to them in return.
How do you connect with people? Do you make time for your friend group?
