Public vs. Private
Sometimes those closest to me think I live too public of a life. Between social media, public videos, opening my home office to others, and sharing my family stories, I’m an open book.
Many years ago, I was attending a training shortly after opening a Facebook account. I used to have a rule: don’t accept friend requests from males. That rule stuck until one day a social media trainer asked, “Annie, do you know that anyone who wants to find something out about someone else can find it with ease? Nothing online can be totally hidden.” He proceeded to encourage me to become an open book, eliminating the need to worry about living two lives and opening the door to align my personal and professional goals rather than attempting to live them separately.
Since combining the two sides of my life, a fellow speaker has given me the nickname “Authentically Annie” and as you all know, that nickname stuck. Often when I’m done speaking someone will ask me, “Are you really this positive, open, silly, etc. in real life?” My answer is always “YES,” because I feel I’m the same person in public that I am in private. However, my family might tell you different after seeing me at home where I go to bed early, have a little less energy, and sometimes lack my usual humor. To that I say, “We all deserve time and space to relax, recover and recharge” which is just as authentic as the other parts of my life.
I’m not saying everyone should share or disclose every aspect of their life but want others to know they shouldn’t be afraid of someone finding out more about them. With today’s technology being what it is, a little investment and light research allows anyone to find out plenty about another person. Today I encourage you to open yourself to the possibility of others and sharing your authentic self!
What does living your exceptional life look like to you?
Are you the same person in public that you are in private?
What are you trying to hide? What secrets are you keeping off of social media?
What are your rules about who you’ll connect with and how much you’ll share?
What are you delivering when you take the stage? What is the value of your words?
Love my corporate clients but have decided to add 6 Public events for those that want a little more training beyond what their conference could offer.
As I teach I am so encouraged by the feedback that returns to me to keep going and Inspiring every chance I get.
Who could you inspire today?
Don’t under value yourself or what you bring to the world through your message
I never deliver a FREE speech but occasionally I bring a Pro-bono Presentation to a cause that doesn’t have a budget but has a need. I don’t do Gigs, I deliver Powerful Presentations. This year I will bring 6 public events, the next one is May 18th if you are ready to dive in and learn more about living an exceptional life. #BetheException #PowerfulPresentations#MotivationalSpeaker #Retreats
What is your Personality on the DISC assessment? I love showing the value of each letter when I teach about Personality and differences.
Though my favorite might be high I’s like me cause we are so much fun and great Influences but without our DSC we would not get anything done and we would miss most of the details. Thank goodness we are all different and bring different strengths to the table or the office and the home ; 0
What makes you different? What makes it challenging to get along with your co-workers, is it age? Background or Personality? Is it Generations? Personality or Perspective that divides or connects us? Please don’t generalize! If you choose you can get along and work with anyone regardless of their age, race, religion, personality, sex maybe we are less different than we think. Have you done strength finders 2.0 or The DISC assessment to understand the people you work with better? The more you know the more you understand. Do you lead with labels, statements & Judgement when you don’t get along with a co-worker or do you lead with Wonder, Curiosity & Questions? Let’s focus more on what we have in common than our differences and it will make all of our offices more friendly, kind and fun place to show up each day! Won’t you join me in seeing how we need each others strengths and gives to get the most & best work done?
My 100th Chooseletter…When you start something, Will you stick with it? Commitment + Consistency over time changes things. Are you ready to GROW your business? Today I have over 6800 subscribers ; )
My journey since the first Chooseletter that came out on January 7, 2014, has been full of adventures, excitement, growth, and learning. I’ve shared 100 choices, thoughts, ideas, stories, and even a few silly moments. I started with just 25 subscribers and now am well over 5,500. I believe these numbers show that consistency over time leads to growth and maybe even success. I’ve spoken to tens of thousands of people, and have been given the opportunity to travel to Paris, Rotterdam, CA, FL, AZ, and all across the Midwest to share my message.
Throughout my journey I’ve learned to go with the flow, as there’s often a little something that doesn’t run exactly as planned. I’ve learned to come early and stay late. I’ve discovered that everyone has a story with great value and lessons in it. People love to be seen, heard, and valued. In my case, making extra time to get to know my audience has been a gift that’s always multiplied and often has a beautiful butterfly effect.
When speaking, I remind people everywhere I go to live by choice, not by chance or circumstance. I encourage others to challenge the areas of their lives that are mediocre and mundane. It’s important to find your pain (struggle), and feel your passion (energy), because that’s where you’ll find your purpose if you choose to pursue it. Life is full of changes, some we choose and some choose us, but either way if you look for the silver lining, you’ll find it. I hope that you’re enjoying my Chooseletters because really, who needs more news when life is all about choices?
I often remind myself that if I teach what I need to learn, I’ll spend the rest of my life learning and hopefully teaching too. The joy of my journey, along with the opportunities to write and speak, are the wonderful people I get to work with and meet along the way. That’s why in today’s Chooseletter, I want more than anything to say thank you. Thank you for your support, encouragement, kind notes, gifts, and gestures. When we get to two hundred Choosletters, it will be your motivation that will have gotten me there.
